Minimally Invasive Surgery

minimally invasive surgery

Minimally invasive surgery (sometimes called laparoscopic surgery) is done through small incisions. Using specialized techniques, miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiber-optic flashlights and high definition monitors. These surgeries can be performed through incisions that require only a stitch or two to close.

For patients, minimally invasive surgery means less trauma to the body, less blood loss, smaller surgical scars and less need for pain medication. Patients leave the hospital sooner after minimally invasive surgery and return to normal activities sooner than with conventional open surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is performed both on an inpatient (stay in the hospital) and outpatient (go home the same day) basis.

All of our gynecologists perform minimally invasive surgery for many common gynecologic conditions such as uterine fibroids, heavy menstruations, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, urinary incontinence and permanent sterilization.

Dr. Gostal Arcelin is one of the few Palm Beach surgeons that now offers minimally invasive surgeries with the Surgical Da Vinci® Robotic system. The Da Vinci® surgical system provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, putting a surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. The Da Vinci® System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. This can be particularly useful for the treatment of uterine fibroids and laparoscopic myomectomies (fibroid removal), as well as complex laparoscopic hysterectomies.
